Greek authorities have rolled out a new digital application aimed at streamlining the passport issuance process, following a joint ministerial decision by the Ministry of Citizen Protection and the Hellenic Police.

The platform digitizes the submission of supporting documents, enabling electronic transmission directly to the police’s Directorate of Passports and Security Documents. Officials say the move will modernize procedures, cut red tape, and strengthen security, while fully complying with personal data protection laws and placing no burden on the state budget.

By eliminating postal delays, the system is expected to reduce processing times by up to two days, minimize errors that often lead to rejected applications, and simplify documentation requirements. It also lowers courier costs and improves security through the use of high-quality digital photographs.

Launched on December 31, the system is now in use nationwide. Authorities plan to extend the service to Greek consulates abroad in 2026, a move that could shorten passport issuance times for expatriates by as much as 30 days.
